On Thursday 10th December 2009 year 5 and 6 students from schools in the Brockhill and Harvey family got together to develop their teamwork and leadership skills in an exciting OAA festival. More than 80 students from Sellindge, Hythe Bay, Elham and Stowting attended the event which took place at Folkestone Sports Centre.
The event included 7 events that tested teamwork, problem solving, navigation and communication. Twenty Four trained leaders from both Harvey and Brockhill did a fantastic job in explaining each event to groups of ten as they rotated around the activites, to include number hunt, ski challenge, sheep and pens, wordsearch, master mind and compass points.
Wordsearch required groups to collect as many letters as possible in 20 seconds and then use those letters to create as many words as possible in 2 minutes. Compass points involved pairs working together using a map and compass to find letters on a designated grid to solve an anagram. Master mind tested the students ability to reveal an order of coloured cones created by the code maker and the code breakers tried to guess what order and what colour cones had been selected.
Teams scored themselves a maximum of 5 points after discussing their teamwork abilities with their activity leader and gold stickers were allocated to students demonstrating outstanding leadership which also gained 5 points towards an activity. All groups demonstrated outstanding teamwork qualities but the overall positions were Sellindge 1 in 3rd place, Elham 1 in 2nd place and Stowting 2 in 1st place.
A big thank you to all the leaders who make these events possible and to everyone in the backround who make the events such a success.
