Primary Play Leaders Programme

The Shepway School Sport Partnership will be offering all schools in the partnership the opportunity to access Play Leader Training for their Year 5 and 6 pupils.

As a partnership, we value highly the importance of encouraging young people to take on the responsibilities linked with being a leader and/or volunteer. It is very clear that young people gain a great deal from developing the skills as young leaders and have regularly demonstrated improved confidence, greater self belief, improved communication skills and greater commitment to school, to name but a few.

It is for these reasons that last year we ran the Sports Leaders UK Primary Leaders Course for schools involved in the Active Play programme. This year we are going to roll out this opportunity across all primary schools, to enable more young people to be trained and to encourage our primary schools to utilise and develop young leaders within their schools.

Schools must meet the following criteria:

  1. The school are responsible for selecting between 10 and 24 Year 5 / 6 pupils, whom they believe are mature and reliable candidates for Play Leader Training
  2. All the selected pupils will be released from curriculum time on a Thursday and/or Friday, for a minimum of 4 hours to receive their training. Times are negotiable; please specify your preferred day(s) and times
  3. The course tutor will deliver the course and award a Pass or Deferment. Any pupil gaining a ‘deferment’ will be given more time and training if they still wish to become a Play Leader. All successful candidates will receive a Young Leader Award certificate; to be presented in school assembly
  4. After completing their training, Play Leaders will be expected to assist with Active Play lunchtimes, or similar playground based activity schemes. They will do this on a rota system, for no more than 2 lunchtimes per week, thus leaving plenty of free time when they are not ‘on duty’
  5. Along with the lunchtime scheme, Play Leaders will also be asked to assist with some Partnership Festivals/Tournaments. This request will apply to Key Stage 1 festivals only. If a school enters a team into such an event, they maybe asked to bring along their qualified Play Leaders to assist the organisers. Play Leaders will be requested on no more than two occasions in one academic year
  6. Schools should also engage Play Leaders in other leadership roles; Sports Days, Challenge Days and Intra House Competitions

Schools wishing to apply should complete a Request Form that can be found in the resources section.
