What is Wake Up and Shake Up?

Wake Up and Shake Up is an energetic, dance-influenced exercise routine set to music which is intended to stimulate the pupils' concentration, learning and behaviour; particularly after lunch.

It is designed to be flexible and to fit into the school day whenever it is felt to be most appropriate, for example, before school, at registration, in assembly, at break, after lunch or during lessons in order to give pupils the opportunity to be physically active every day.

The Shepway School Sport Partnership will deliver initial sessions in schools in order to familiarise children, teachers and AOTTs with the routines and to emphasis that high quality movement should be a priority. Each school will then continue the run Wake Up and Shake, with support as requested.

Everyone in all parts of the school can be involved, from head teachers to TAs to parents and the receptionists! It will become embedded in the working life of the school; a positive and happy school ethos is promoted at the start of the school day.

Why do we need Wake Up and Shake Up?

Wake Up and Shake Up can help your school reach the Government PSA target of two hours of PE and school sport. If your school was to ‘Wake Up and Shake Up' for 10 minutes each day it would account for nearly half of your two hours!

Children will be more alert and receptive; they will demonstrate better behaviour, concentration and learning throughout the school day.

Following a ‘Wake Up and Shake Up' session children will focus, settle and be ready for work quicker and easier.

Wake Up and Shake Up will increase physical co-ordination, fine and gross motor skills, rhythm, timing and fitness in all pupils and staff!

It will help tackle childhood obesity and the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of children. Wake Up and Shake Up will provide a positive, happy, cohesive and team ethos for your school.

How can we start Wake Up and Shake Up?

Wake Up and Shake Up can fit into your school day at any point:

  • First thing, once the children are lined up ready to go into school
  • During registration
  • During assembly
  • At morning/afternoon break time
  • At the end of lunch
  • During lessons to break up intensive study periods
  • PPA

The Shepway School Sport Partnership will provide the resources which will enable you to initiate Wake Up and Shake Up in your school.

This will include:

  • Pre-choreographed routines
  • DVD
  • A training workshop for all potential ‘Instructors' (that's your teachers and TAs!)
  • An SSCo or aerobics instructor to support the initial sessions
  • Necessary equipment
  • Ongoing support for your school
